The brief arrived as one sentence from the client: a languid, boudoir thing, a lover’s room, somewhere up in a treehouse. She sent ten reference images with it — dark interiors, animal prints, retro glamour. We used none of them. Copied literally, they would have put Morocco in the jungle.

What we kept was the mood. The palette turned to bordeaux and terracotta instead of black, because jungle outside the window asks for warmth. The ceiling is built as a cut through a tree seen from inside, since the house itself stands in one. A round bed on a podium, a wall of oval mirrors, a pink bath in the corner.

42 square metres, three of these lifted into the canopy on crossed timber legs. Behind the curtains there is nothing but jungle. This is the format guests come here for, and the reason they don’t book a hotel instead.
