A two-storey villa in Pererenan, Bali, with a living room six and a half metres high. The client framed the job in two sentences: it must not come out beige, and it must not go black either. She is not afraid of dark rooms. She is afraid of gloomy ones.

So we gathered all the dark into one plane. The kitchen disappears into a black front running floor to ceiling, with appliances, storage, the wine cabinet and the space under the stair behind it. The rest of the room stays light. One object is left standing on the floor: a travertine island with a black table growing out of it. We used four materials in the whole house: plaster, black matte lacquer, grey travertine, dark oak.
We hid the technology the same way. The bedroom projector sits inside the joinery behind a motorised flap and opens from the smart home. We kept the television off the full wall, as the client asked. Light is what we left in view: a textured luminous box hangs low over the island, thin lit tubes run through the double height. Narrow planted courtyards cut into the facade bring the green inside in vertical strips.
